Checksum errors with 'restore -i'

I am a fairly new system administrator. I have encountered the following
problem on an AlphaServer 2100A machine running Tru64-Unix 4.0 (plain).

The root file system is backed up to DLT tape by a script that includes the
following command:

/sbin/dump -0 -uf /dev/nrmt0h -b 64 /

The backup appears to complete normally. When I attempt to restore a file
from the dump using interactive restore, the file is restored correctly but
there are numerous "checksum errors":

> restore -i -v -b64
Verify tape and initialize maps

 ... etc.

Attempting to extract files from further into the dump results in huge
numbers (thousands) of these error messages. The file system appears in all
functional respects to be fine, and the system is humming away without
problems.

Can anyone enlighten me on what is happening here? Is the problem with the
dump, the restore command, or the file system? What can I do to correct it?

Thanks in advance for your help,
