Since noone of these have had any problems with vdump with the -N option
(or saving to /dev/nrmtxx[a-h]) I guess I will using that from now on.
Here is the mail from Allen Belk that explains it all very well:
<quote---
The -N option causes vdump to use the no-rewind-on-close device
(/dev/nrmtxx[a-h]). This allows you to backup several filesets
consecutively on one tape (capacity permitting). I personally use the nrmt
device as my target device instead of using -N with the rmt device, even
though they do the same thing and I have had no problems with it for the
past 2 years. Once you have backed up several filesets to the tape, you can
use mt to move to any fileset on the tape, just remember to use the nrmt
device, otherwise, it will skip over however many filesets you specify and
then it will rewind.
example:
vdump -0f /dev/nrmt0h /fileset
is the same as
vdump -0Nf /dev/rmt0h /fileset
--end quote>
