Summary:

/tmp is not used for swap space in Digital Unix.
It is used for temporary files created by for example "vi".
The point of having /tmp on a separate partition is to avoid filling up the /
partition.
Size depends on needs and that depends heavily on the applications
available on the system.... one suggestion was 64Meg.
