Hello,
SUMMARY:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
My question is two parts; 1. QuickSpecs verse Systems and Options Catalog
and, 2. ESA 12000 UltraSCSI information, or lack of, at Compaq's StorageWorks
web site.
I visited the Systems and Options (SO) Catalog web site,
http://www.digital.com/SOHOME/ last updated October 22, 1999, this
morning and still found the announcement about SO's planned replacement
by Compaq's QuickSpecs. The page suggests sending comments to
cimg_at_compaq.com. I sent my comments to cimg_at_compaq.com September 3,
1999 and received no feedback. It was suggested that we send letters
to Compaq CEO Michael D. Capellas to help him understand that Compaq
customers benefit and appreciate good technical configuration
documentation. Mr. Capellas perhaps has never purchased Digital
equipment in the past and may not understand the value of the Digital
customer's Rosetta stone, Systems and Options Catalog.
Mr. Capellas address is (Compaq operator would not give me his email address):
Compaq Computer Corporation
P.O. Box 692000
Houston, Texas 77269-2000
Attn: CEO Michael D. Capellas, MS 110802
Case in point. I have been trying to finalize the purchase and installation
of a ESA 12000 UltraSCSI cabinet since February 1999. Due to the lack
of the Systems and Options (SO) Catalog originally I had to rely
on Compaq's StorageWorks pre-sales for the configuration. Needlessly to
say it has not worked well. QuickSpecs eventually came out but it is
too quick and not enough specs.
ESA 12000 UltraSCSI information is now available at Compaq's StorageWorks
web site. However, only the meager QuickSpecs are available. Visit

QUESTIONS:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[WHINE ENABLED]
Have you visited the glorious, full-of-juicy-information, Digital
Systems and Options Catalog web site lately at
http://www.digital.com/SOHOME/? Have you noticed it is being
discontinued and replaced by the Compaq QuickSpecs documents? After
reading the QuickSpec for the ESA12000 I find myself longing for a
Systems and Options Catalog. The QuickSpecs seem too quick and not
enough specs. Does Compaq have LongSpecs, or perhaps TechSpecs?
Have you tried to get technical StorageWorks product information and
been redirected to Compaq's web site? Have you noticed Compaq's product
information is more marketing than technical? Have you noticed the
Compaq StorageWorks product coverage is spotty? For example, the ESA12000
information is Fibre Channel centric. Where is the UltraSCSI, HSZ80,
information.
One hopes when two companies are combined the best of both worlds are
chosen. How is QuickSpecs superior to Systems and Options Catalog?
[WHINE DISABLE]
I am trying to be objective here.
What can Compaq customers do to either have Compaq improve the content
quality of QuickSpecs or drop QuickSpecs for the
rules-the-world-light-years-ahead-and-far-superior (oops) Systems and
Options Catalog?
I have sent email to the Compaq web admin querying about the ESA12000
UltraSCSI information without receiving a reply nor improvement at the
site. Does Compaq plan to ignore or drop support for the ESA12000 UltraSCSI
solution already?
