My original question was:

Sean O'Connell responded right away and hit the nail on the head. He
instructed me to look in /etc/svc.conf and make sure that there are no
references to yp. When I looked in the file, yp was on every line. I removed
each reference to yp and now mail does go out of the Alpha Server.
I messed with NIS and yp earlier in the year but decided not to do anything
with it at this time. I thought that I had cleaned it up, but apparently I
did not manage to do so.
Thanks Sean!
