Performance question for HSZ70s: RAID 1 or 5?

I presently have a single, 45Gb partition, made up of 6, 9Gb disks
in a RAID 5 set on a pair of HSZ70 controllers.

We're seeing some performance degradation during the day, and I'm
planning to break up the large partition into several smaller
partitions.

My question has to do with the performance of RAID 5 over RAID 1.
Do I take a big performance hit when I run RAID 5 on the HSZ70?

Can anyone point me to some online statistics on real-world
performance of RAID 1 vs. RAID 5 when done in hardware this way?

My main consideration is that I can get 36Gb of usable disk
space out of 3 disk instead of 4 if I use RAID 5. But, if the
performance will be less because of this choice, then I just
go with mirrored 18Gb sets, and live with the repercussions of
smaller disk mount points.

Thanks for your assistance.
