Hi,
We have LaTeX/TeX running on 4.0f. We didn't build it but just installed the
teTeX distribution from the CTAN archives (
http://www.ctan.org). It runs
just fine.

The teTeX system works for us. See
http://tug.cs.umb.edu/tetex/.
Compiling from source is a little tricky, but
precompiled binaries are available at
ftp://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/comp/tex/teTeX/1.0/distrib/binaries/

There are several packages available. A very complete TeX and LaTeX
package is TeTeX, available e. g. at
ftp.belnet.be:/packages/TeX/systems/unix/TeTeX
There are sources and binaries

Marc,
I have had good experience with the TeTeX distribution on 4.0B . It can be
obtained (for example) from
http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/distrib/sources/
with instructions in

I upgraded ours to the teTeX 1.0.6 distribution
(
http://www.tug.org/tetex/) a few months ago, it
compiled fine with CC=cc -std1, CXX=cxx on our
4.0D system.

Try teTeX from any good TeX mirror, e.g. ftp.tex.ac.uk. There is also
a pre-compiled version for alpha...

Hi,
we compiled and linked the teTeX distribution (available for instance from
www.dante.de in Germany) and it runs fine on our Alpha machines with 4D,
4E and 4F. I think there are even pre-compiled executables, therefore
check this WWW server. If I remember correctly, teTeX is the standard
LaTeX distribution for any kind of Unix machines.
Good luck,

Try teTeX's distribution. I've had good luck with that....the
only problem I've seen with that distribution is the ./configure
script does not set prefix=/other/path in the ncurses directory.
Other than that, it compiles v. nicely on 4.0d with gcc 2.95.

Look at ftp.dante.de/pub/tex/systems/unix/teTeX/current/distrib/
You must download
- install.sh file
- base directory (complete)
- doc directory (complete)
- fonts directory (complete)
- goodies directory (complete)
- the binary (alpha-osf.tar.gz) in the binaries directory
optional the sources directory
Also read the INSTALL file
The teTeX distribution work fine on Tru64 Unix 4.0X.

Yes, we're running it on 4.0d. However, I didn't try to compile it
from source, I used the TeTeX binary distribution and it's worked
fine. It's available on CTAN mirrors.

You can just grab the alpha binaries from teTeX distribution.
It is available from any number of the CTAN archives:
ftp.belnet.be (Belgium) /packages/TeX
under
systems/unix/teTeX/1.0/distrib/
>From the INSTALL file
You should look at the output of the "dir binaries" command and substitute
the appropriate file(s) in place of "sparc-solaris.tar.gz".
For a minimal installation you need the following files:
install.sh
base/latex-base.tar.gz
base/tetex-base.tar.gz
binaries/<the binary for your platform>
we are alpha-osf.tar.gz

Dear Mark,
I suggest to use teTeX distribution. You can find it on
ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/current/distrib
It includes precompiled binaries for Tru64 Unix and works pretty good for
us (4.0d,4.0e,4.0f).

There are plenty of people doing this ... :-)
> We only found some sources that won't compile on our 4.0F system.
Go to one of the CTAN (=comprehensive TeX archive network) servers or
one of the many mirrors, and get "tetex" precompiled for DU.
CTAN servers: dante.ctan.org (Germany), cam.ctan.org(UK), tug.ctan.org (US)
Log in via anonymous ftp, cd to directory
/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/1.0/distrib
The file INSTALL tells you, which files you need and how to install them.
Of course you can also compile it from the sources, but there should
be no need to do so.

I have TeX installed on an AS here. I got hold of a TeX Live CD which had
everything pre-compiled, will even run off the CD I think.. The CD is
produced by the TeX User Group (TUG).
Probably the best place to start is:
http://www.tug.org/
I think they have the pre-compiled stuff there, or you can order a CD.

We are running the "tetex" distribution - there are binaries for DUnix4.0:
(from INSTALL.bin...)
===========================================================================
1) getting the archives
===========================================================================
If starting from nil, and you do not wish to recompile the binaries,
approximately the following sequence of commands will get the files you
need to install teTeX (replace /usr/local/temp with any temporal directory
where you have enough free space):
# mkdir /usr/local/temp
# cd /usr/local/temp
# mkdir binaries base doc fonts goodies
# ftp sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de [substitute the archive nearest to you]
ftp> cd /pub/comp/tex/teTeX/distrib [modify as needed for the given archive]
ftp> bin
ftp> dir binaries
ftp> prompt
ftp> mget install.sh base doc fonts goodies binaries/i386-linux.tar.gz
ftp> quit

Dear Marc,
I've installed tex & latex on our Tru64 Unix 4.0d machines.
I got tex sources from
http://www.tug.org/web2c
The very first problem was to compile initex and virtex in
web2c-6.1/web2c/tex
to do that I first had to modify
web2c-6.1/kpathsea
according to my installation
Once tex (that is virtex) was installed, I succesfully installed latex
It has been easy: it was enough to follow the instructions.
you can fing latex sources at the same URL
