We currently run an NSR 5.2 server on a Compaq AlphaServer 8200 with Tru64
Unix 4.0d and patch kit #3, but we want to move the NSR server operations
off that system to another AlphaServer. This NSR server handles backups
for approximately 25 clients. We also plan on adding a few more to the mix
soon.
Our biggest NSR client (in terms of file capacity) is a Compaq TruCluster
that consists of a pair of AlphaServer 4100 boxes. We only run one node of
the cluster at a time. The home volume (which will soon be split up) is
actually an ASE service as is our mail volume as are some of the other
volumes so that they can be accessed by the active node. The disks are
managed by a pair of HSZ70 units.
What we want to do is connect the TZ812 tape library (with its four TZ88
Ultrawidde SCSI drives) that's currently on our NSR server directly to the
TruCluster. This would let us treat the cluster as a storage node so that
NSR backups can go directly to that tape library via the HSZ70 units. We
plan to add another 267 slot tape library to the NSR server for use in
backing up all of our other clients and use the TZ812 tape library just
for the cluster file backups.
The problem is that we do not have enough unused ports on eiether of the
cluster nodes to accommodate the four TZ88 tape drives in the TZ812. As an
alternative, we thought about hooking The TZ812 up to our HSZ70s instead.
As I understand it, this jukebox would then become an ASE cluster service
with its own IP address. What I am wondering is if anyone else who reads
this list has tried this and how its worked out for you.
