[resubmition] external scsi disk

Hi Gurus,

I am resubmitting the following: we have installed a IBM Ultrastar
18ES 18.1Gb external disk on a DEC 3000 600/DU 3.2. We have disconnected
one of the five old RZ28 2 Gb disks in the process, in order use its scsi
target number on the already full narrow scsi1 circuit. We are facing
an annoying performance difficulty when writing or removing large
files/directories in/from the new disk. Instead of reacting promptly
to the command the disk hangs (and also all other disks) for one minute
or so until a kind of 'general disk update' happens. A fellow from this
list has informed the same disk works well in his DU 4.0E system. We
are about to upgrade to True64-unix and maybe this can handle it better.
Until then, anyone has suggestions on how to circumvent this performance
trouble?

TIA,
