To all the folks that responded - thank you.
Problem was: After the upgrade, the console would no longer support CDE.
The first reply from Dr. Tom Blinn was on target. The OS doesn't support
the PCI graphics card and support was removed from the OPEN3D package. The
first clue actually occurred when the admin attempted the 4.0B-->4.0D
upgrade, it failed with the instructions to remove OPEN3D and multimedia
packages. Unfortunately the notice to this effect was not read until after
the damage had been done.
Lesson learned as always - RTFM.
