We recently encountered some variations between the results of "sum
[fn]" on our Digital UNIX boxes and an HP server.
We downloaded a y2k software bundle from the HP web site to a Digital
machine with the intention of moving it over to the HP. Three different
downloads to different Digital machines, at different times using even a
different Internet connection produced the same checksum but not the
correct one.
Finally we gained access to an actual ftp site and the checksum of that
download was correct. Moved the file over to the HP box (from the Digital
server) using FTP and then got a completely different checksum.
A direct download to the HP box from the FTP site also produced this same,
different, apparently incorrect checksum.
So we are seeing consistent, different results between the checksums of the
Digital and the HP downloads. Does the resident brain trust have any
insight or explanation for this variation?
Thanks.
