A number of people wrote back to me to tell me that:
consvar -g sys_serial_num
doesn't work for them, or doesn't work on some platforms.
I can only assume then that this is user settable and the
Compaq field engineers in my region are particularly
conscientious as I tried this on a mix of GS140's, 8400's,
4100's, ES40's and DS20's here and got serial numbers
back from all of them. The only one I didn't was from a 2100.
