I would like to thank Denise Dumas and Spider Boardman. They suggested
identifying the passwd.byname and prpasswd compiled map master by using
ypwhich and then verifying it against the /etc/hosts file entry.
Unfortunately, this does not help to find the cause of the problem. The
problem was escalated to Compaq engineering and I am waiting for their
reply.
Thanks

Subject: NIS master and C2 problem
Hello managers
I have a C2 security problem. The NIS users passwords DB was corrupted on my
NIS domain master server and since then, even after all the password DBs
were cleaned up, I receive a strange message when trying to edit a user's
profile (i.e. edauth <nis username>).
The message says that I must be on the NIS domain master server to edit the
user's profile.
I reconfigured the NIS, the security level back to BASE and then back to
ENHANCED, recreated the auth.db files but nothing helps.
Does anybody know how the C2 mechanism reads the systems NIS configuration
and decides if the system is a master server or not?
The system is running Digital Unix 4.0D with PK#3
Thanks
