The problem was with the Advanced Printing Software (APX) notification
daemon filling X error logs with messages like this:
AUDIT: Fri Dec 10 09:28:22 1999: 22975 X: client 18 rejected from IP
130.102.120.16 port 16904
Thanks to Rob Hamilton at Compaq who pointed me to a patch for
this and another problem:

we intend to change pdconntf in an upcoming release so as
not to use ToolTalk or have X server dependencies.
