Thanks heaps to everybody who helped; especially James Sainsbury and Dennis
MacDonell who got me closest to the solution.
The problem turned out to be that the operator loaded in blanks in error.
My use of the vrestore command was right. The "dd -if" command helped
verify that the tape was indeed incorrect.
