Colin provided a list of POST error codes, but no F4.
Selden relayed the exact error condition on his system
was the motherboard. It appears that a service manual
for this guy is hard to come by and the owner's
manual, which I have, is not much help. Fearing the
worst, I had to know for sure so I placed a call to
Support. Compaq Support thought it might just be an
I/O module, but my worst fears were confirmed, the
motherboard was the culprit and it's useful lifetime
is over.
As an aside, Compaq Support was great with this, from
phone to onsite service engineer, even though this
system was not under contract. And they were willing
and able, with all necessary parts, to get this
dinosaur running again. I know Support gets bashed,
but we have two top notch service guys in our area and
have never had a bad experience with Compaq (read
Digital) support.

I have a DEC 3000/900 that crashed yesterday and
currently will not boot. I cannot even get a console
prompt after power cycling. The diagnostic display
lights during the power-on test stop at code F4. Can
someone point me to a service manual so I may decode
this error? The Compaq web site seems to have
abandoned the old guys.
