I received several excellent replies. Thank you to all who responded.
Apparently, Netscape has a tendency to remove the .gz extension from
compressed files during the download. I renamed the file and added the .gz
extension, ran gunzip and then was able to use $tar tvf to list the files in
the archive.

Subject: Error file using tar
All,
I have searched the archives with no help. I am trying to extract data from
a tar file that I received from Oracle. I get an error every time. I have
even tried downloading the file again to make sure that the original was not
corrupt. The error is as follows:
pgia05> tar xvf developer6i_patch1.tar
blocksize = 256
tar: developer6i_patch1.tar : This doesn't look like a tar archive
tar: developer6i_patch1.tar : Skipping to next file...
tar: Memory allocation failed for extended data while reading : Not enough
space
pgia05>
Are there any other qualifiers that I am missing or should I contact Oracle?
Thanks,
Dawn Urey
