Just wanted to say "thank you" to the masses of people that responded to my question. The answer is pretty much unanimous:
BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(and have backups of your backups!!)
There is simply no easy way to get back out of the upgrade, so you would have to restore everything from your backups. A few people suggested actually using a spare disk and make a copy of your system disk, so you could just pop in the copy and boot from it. Or if you don't have a spare disk (like me) and your system supports it (unlike me) you could make a bootable tape backup!! Pretty cool stuff. Thanks again to all who replied.
