Well, we were running on 4.0F, that was it!
I will either try suggested ypchfn or upgrade to v5.x

Note that a non T64 NIS client with ypchsh will happily change
shell on a T64 NIS server: we have a number of Linux and T64
boxes. The master is a T64 box.
