Thanks to Dr. Tom Blinn of Compaq who, with remarkable instinct, gently
asked if I was *sure* that I had indeed booted the NHD procedure from
the CDFS filesystem which I had generated and installed on the spare
local hard disk (I did not have a way to burn an actual CD). I had
not. Rather, because of my misreading of the instructions, I was
booting the 'osf_boot' file from the system hard disk, rather than from
the spare local hard disk. Tom also described an interesting shortcut
procedure for installing just the support needed for the DE600 card,
but I did not try this.
The documentation in the release notes might be more helpfully written
as shown below. It is the (now obvious) need to specify the spare
local hard disk device name explictly that was the problem.
Use of a CD-ROM device (example, DQA0):
boot -flag fax -file GENERIC DQA0
Use of a spare local hard disk (example, DKA100):
boot -flag fax -file GENERIC DKA100
With only the presence of some error messages pertaining to an apparently
missing patch kit documentation file,
'usr/sys/hardware/patch/DIGITAL_UNIX_V4.0F/doc/ps', the entire procedure
now went smoothly.
Thanks also to the following, whose help, while equally rapid, did not in
most cases apply sufficiently closely to my circumstances as to be of use:

Sean Davidson
