Thanks to Kat,Wayne, Kamal, Devin for the help.

All pointed me to this solution.

delete the file

/etc/.AM_is_running

and you should be OK...

And from your friendly command line is our friend guru

Yes, I think that is right ... dxaccounts will not work when another user is
using it. You can get on as root, use ps -aux to find the process using it,
kill that process, and then the GUI interface will work. I don't know if
there is a lock file associated with dxaccounts; if there is, you might have
to delete an empty file to call up the GUI interface.

Otherwise, you should be able to use commands like useradd or adduser from
the command line interface.

Alternatively, use the traditional way of editing /etc/passwd, /etc/groups,
creating the HOME directory of the user, and using the passwd command to set
the user's password. This should always work. :-)

Subject: Adding users

I am a Unix Admin in training. And I am having a small problem. I am
trying it add a user and for some reason it won't let me.

I am using the GUI to add users and I am logged in as root. I have tried to
add users under my own login name and it won't let me do that either( I used
to be able to). It say I don't have permission to do so. I used to.

When I log in as root it won't even open up the GUI interface to add user.
click on it and it asks if you want to use it as the logged in name or root.
Either choice (when logged in as root) is root and the gui never opens.

I have tried to start dxaccounts from the command line and it says the the
passwd and group files are locked by another user. This server is used for
training purposes so the need is not critical. It is used by myself and one
other person.......

Any insight or suggestion to resolve this issue would be appriciated. I
will be here all night hoping that there are a few other night owls out
there or your on the other side of the planet and it your day time:)

Thanks in advance.
