I am a rookie Unix System Admin, so bear with me :)
Our current configuration is such :
Oracle 8.0.5 running on Alpha DS20, Tru 64 - 4.0f, Legato 6.0.1
Client
Backup server is NT 4.0 Patch Kit 6, Legato 6.0.1 Server
Backups are controlled by scripts that shutdown oracle, clone the fileset,
restart the database's, then backup
up the cloned fileset. This has been working with no problems for well over
a year.
Starting on Feb 7th, I have been unable to recover certain files. If a
database is made up of 27 files, there is
one file that I cannot recover.
To confirm whether I can recover the database I invoke recover, traverse to
the directory in question, add *, then
when I do a "volumes" command, it generates a "doctor watson" on the NT
server. Obviously if I get the Doc Wat
I cannot recover that particular database.
My NT counter-parts at my location were also having some problems, they said
they were able to fix them by
simply running a chkdsk on a system that they had backup problems with.
The Unix boxes I am backing up are running advfs, therefore if I wanted to
perform a chkdsk I would have to perform
a verify.
Now my question(s).
The Unix boxes have been up for 100+ days. Nothing has changed.
Could the data on the disc's become corrupted ??
Would oracle even run if the data on the disks is corrupted ?
Should I run verify anyways as a Monthly sys admin procedure ?
I suspect the problem is with the NT server, but I just want to ensure I
have all the bases covered on the Unix side
before I start bringing systems down.
