UPDATE: Console GUI Login Problem

I have gotten many excellent suggestions so far but in attempting to
implement them found that I mis-reported the problem. In fact, root is only
allowed to login at the console via a failsafe login; command line also
returns immediately to the login prompt. The .profile, .login, and
.dtprofile all appear to be the same as on similar systems which do work
properly. The other user accounts can login at the console via Regular
Desktop, Command Line, and Failsafe without problems. The network
configuration is fine, with DNS working fine and hostname and aliases being
correct in the /etc/hosts and /etc/rc.config files.

This system is scheduled to be rebuilt on new hardware on Tru64 5.1 so
resolving this problem isn't critical, I just thought it would be nice to
understand for future reference. I have included many of the suggestions
I've received so far as they may still be useful to folks. Thanks to all
the excellent replies!

Quick and dirty CDE fixup:
1. Login as root using the command line option.
2. Move the ".dt" directory in root's home to ".dt.hosed".
3. Log out.
4. Log back in using the normal session.
CDE will recreate the default login environment and recreate the
".dt" directory under root's home directory. If everything is fine
at this point, you can start looking at re-incorporating anything
you can't live without from the old ".dt.hosed" directory (keeping
in mind that there is something in there that will hose up your
login session).
---
Try removing your .Xauthority and your .TTauthority
files in your root home directory. You might have to
look in /tmp, /var/tmp, and also /var/.dt/tmp to find
old/corrupted temp files that you might have to get
rid of. Does it stop at the blueish screen where it
says "starting cde desktop"? If so, then it's a
tooltalk problem and you should look under /tmp and
remove a file that starts with .TT_ that should fix
your problem.
---
Try removing /tmp/.X11_unix and /.Xauthority and login again
---
Usually an error in one of the startup scripts. Check .dtprofile, .profile,
.login et al.
---
I removed the .xsession file - and presto - it all worked again.
You also may want to rename the .profile/.login/.cshrc file
