Managers....
This is a *long* overdue posting , for which I am sorry. We have been
running various tests and are now happy that we have a solution that works
for us.
the original question was -
---<snip>----------
Dear Tru64-ers,
For some time our systems monitoring has been relying on an email-to-SMS
conversion (performed by a company out there on the net) to send messages to
our mobile phones. This works 95% of the time but is prone to delays (of
several hours sometimes) or complete failure.
We have managed to get our tru64 monitoring node talking to a modem and
happily dialling out. What I want to do is send SMS messages to our mobile
phones.
Q1 - Can I send direct SMS (i.e. phone the mobile itself , not a call
centre)?
Q2 - If yes , does anyone have a sample script I can look at to perform this
?
Currently all the examples I can find are for dialling pagers or SMS via a
call centre.
We are based in the UK - don't know if this matters to the SMS
protocols.....
Any help or advice gratefully received.

The solution was pieced together from all your mails, so thanks to all.....
What we had to do in the end was use a central message centre to relay the
messages for us.
There does not appear to be an easy way to send SMS messages directly to the
mobile phones.
The scripts that handle the actual dialling were done using a copy of
'Kermit' downloaded from columbia university.
Rather than post the scripts here I will send some examples to anyone that
requires them. Please mail me if you would like a copy.
Note - The message centre is not quite 100% reliable , so we have a 'belt
and braces' approach in that if the SMS call centre via modem is not
successful after 5 attempts we use the 'email-to-SMS' system that we used to
use.
There was a suggestion from Brian Schau that a certain brand of modem was
listed as SMS compatible, but I could find no UK distributor. :-( A shame,
as it sounded promising....
This may be of use to some of you.
"We use a similar setup using a

Smiles :-)
