Dear Experts:
I have been using a Digital PrintServer LPS17/600 printer for the past
seven years or so and the time has come to replace it with something
better. We currently print on this duplex printer from all our unix
machines (Tru64 et al.) and from our PCs via a Novell server.
The printer has the LPS PrintServer Software installed which enables
us, among other things to manage the printer, and have a complete
accounting record of who is printing, etc.
I am considering getting an HP LaserJet 8150 printer (and additionally
perhaps an HP Color LaserJet) and I am concerned about the software
available to manage these printers. In particular, we need to know
how many pages everybody is printing, whether they are printing on one
side or both sides of the paper, and which input tray they are printing
from. Additionally, the user should be able to choose simplex or
duplex, portrait or landscape, input tray (e.g. Letter, A4, transparency),
and be able to print more than one page per side. These are, of course,
all standard options of the lpr or Windows printer software, but those
of you with an LPS17 know that these options don't work via lpr and need
to be interfaced via the lps software (i.e. translated into PostScript).
I know that HP has software for managing its JetDirect printers (the
netwrok interface), and my question is if anyone of you has experience
with this an can report how good a job this software does at managing
and accounting these printers. Also, I have the APX Advanced Printing
Software software installed. Will this help me to manage such a
printer? Will it be able to account for print jobs sent from other
machines (e.g. linux, Novell).

Peter
