Description of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Scientific and Open Systems Branch (SOSB) of the Division of
Computer System Services is seeking a highly motivated, creative,
customer-oriented individual to serve as a senior computer scientist
or specialist leading system administration and operating system
projects on central Unix servers at the National Institutes of Health.
The SOSB plans, manages, and supports central Unix-based general
purpose and high performance computers for use by NIH administrators
and scientists; installs and supports scientific and Web-based
application programs, scientific databases, programming languages, and
system administration tools on systems managed by the branch.
The information technology (IT) professional leads system
administration projects for a range of Unix systems, including high
performance computers, database servers and mid-sized Web and
application servers; has primary responsibility for and expertise in
at least one major area of system administration such as operating
system installation and configuration, network or file system
management, database system administration, performance tuning and
analysis, or security. The IT professional diagnoses significant
software faults and designs and implements corrections; proposes
designs, implements and tests modifications that significantly enhance
system functionality. The computer scientist/specialist evaluates
usage and performance of current hardware and software and maintains
an in-depth knowledge of new and evolving technologies in order to
ensure sufficient capacity and the most appropriate platforms for a
growing user base of enterprise database and web applications.
The IT professional leads major Unix-based operating environment
projects and serves as a technical resource to the project team and to
the user community. The computer scientist/specialist writes manuals,
guides, on-line help and other documentation for system users. The
scientist/specialist must also effectively convey complex computing
concepts and techniques using multiple communications mechanisms to
build consensus among users and guide them to make optimum use of the
facilities.
