duplicate groups in /etc/group file

Hi, for some time our 4.0D Tru64 server has been set up so that larger groups
(for this site, that's 80 users or so) are spread out across several lines in
the /etc/group file.

For example,
biggroup:*:18:u1,u2,u3,u4,u5,u6,u7,u8,u9,u10,u11,u12,u13,u14,u15,u16,u17,u18,u19,u20,u21,u23,u24,u25
biggroup:*:18:u26,u27,u28,u29,u30,u31,u32,u33... etc
... where u1...u(n) are the names of all the users in biggroup.

Is there a sane reason for us to be doing this?
I believe this started in 1997, when we migrated to Digital Unix from Ultrix,
but it's unclear to me whether the policy is "enforced" by the operating
system or was put in place by a previous system administrator.

Thanks for any insights.
