Hi,

First, thanks to all of the following (in order of response):

Bryan Lavelle
Paul Roetman
Bob Klenotiz
Dennis Peacock
William Magill
Jim Jones
Izzet Ergas
Gary Phipps

I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply, but I was doing
some checking on this side also and was somewhat sick for a
week or so.

Most votes went for Legato, then Veritas. Some said that Legato
was the only one that really supported clusters, while some
thought Veritas did, but was not really positive about that.
Another one, Syncsort, was highly recommend by one group that
had over 28TB of data and were very satisfied with it. I was
not sure if they are clustered, but I imagined they probably
are, since they are a big alpha site. Syncsort cost a lot less
than Legato or Veritas - it is Syncsort Backup Express.

Here are some links that were also suggested in one mailing:
------------------------
don't forget Amanda..... (www.amanda.org)

there is a very good website, worth reviewing
        http://www.backupcentral.com
and a good book worth reading (it changed my backup/recovery thoughts
totally)

        Unix Backup and Recovery
(http://www.backupcentral.com/books-osbackup.html)

I think it is fairly well priced if you search for it on www.mysimon.com, or
www.half.com, www.fatbrain.com, etc

and for a quick look at Amanda
http://www.backupcentral.com/amanda.html

We have used both Legato and Veritas, and they both perform the same
functions equally. Legato does allow the possibility of getting far more
complex that Veritas, but tends to be a little more cryptic for it.
------------------------

Amanda, was questions in some mailings if it supported 5.x or clusters
but another mailing though it supported clusters.

Although both Legato and Veritas were highly recommend by many, I also
got warning that Legato had some quality control issues and management
problems recently. On the other hand, it was said that some could not
get a straight answer out of Veritas if they really supported clusters
and advfs. In one email it was questions if Veritas supported 5.x yet.

I would say, that I got more votes for Legato than Veritas and more
negatives on Veritas, but both got positive reviews. Syncsort looked
very good, esp. considering the amount of data it was dealing with
and that there were a lot of nodes involved.

For now, due to expenses, we are doing to try to use vdump/vrestore.
There are three nodes: A, B and C. A and B are clustered. A will have
the tape units on it, B will have an older single tape unit on it
as will C. A will back up the shared area of A and B and the private
area of A. B will back up its on private area and so will C.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Douglas
