com1 on ES40...

Hello...

I am attempting to use the 9-pin com1 port on the back of my ES40 for
modem dial-out (com2 is used for ups signal cable).

Can I hook a modem up to it? I've read different postings about this - in
that com1 really isn't com1 on this (and other) alpha servers. I did hook
up a working cable and modem to it and I didn't get the DTR light on the
modem and couldn't talk to it with 'cu' (got connected but no rx/tx).

 Thanks in advance...
