devices names being automatically created in 5.1

i was setting up a unit in a HSG80 pair attached to an ES40 w/ Tru64 Unix
5.1. the unit created fine (a six member RAID), but when i did a "hwmgr
-scan scsi" followed by a "hwmgr -show scsi", a name of <null> was given as
the new device name for the unit. i had to reboot the ES40 to have a device
name, in my case "dsk4", assigned to the unit. after, my filesystems
created fine.

i'm sure there is a way to have the device name created instead of rebooting
the OS. any ideas?
