The answer was to:
1. install the card
2. check to make sure srm saw it (it did)
3. boot genvmunix and look for a new scsi channel at some device name.
4. add 'config_driver psiop' to the kernel config file in /sys/conf
5. run doconfig -c 'FILENAME'
6. backup the old vmunix and install the new one into / and boot it.
