Thanks much for the summary, Kumar, and Paul.

And that's where I'm stuck now. The URL given for zlib no longer has the
software, so I downloaded zlib from the site linked to its home page:
ftp://ftp.thewrittenword.com/packages/free/by-architecture/alpha-dec-osf4.0d/zlib-1.1.3/zlib-1.1.3.setld.gcpio.gz
After gunzipping the file, I was left with a .gcpio file that I can't do
anything with. It is not a tar file, cpio doesn't recognise it, and setld
doesn't magically see through it. So after downloading a GNU version of cpio
and finding I couldn't even compile it I said hey, maybe this is getting us
way off track.
There was a lot of interesting stuff on that site, and I now have a small
collection of these taunting *.gcpio files to keep me humble :-)
Where did I start going wrong?
