SUMMARY: network card doesn't autonegotiate

Dear all,

short summary: it still doesn't work.

long summary:

some additional info: the ethernet card is a "KZPCM PCI-to-Dual
Channel UltraSCSI and 10/100MB Ethernet Hosts Adapter", capable of
full- and half-duplex at 10 and 100 Mbit. It reports as DE500-AA
using 'show config'. It worked before with a Lantronix LSW8F switch
fine when setting ewa0_mode to 'FastFD'.

 - several people suggested to try different configurations in the
switch. Since this is a very basic mini switch it can't be
   configured.

 - most people mentioned that setting the card to 'Auto-Negotiate' at
the SRM prompt might not be a good idea. However, the setting in
SRM was Fast or FastFD anyway.

 - several suggested using the 'lan_config' or 'ifconfig' utility
after botting: no luck. Leaving ewa0_mode at 'Twisted-Pair' and the
   using

     lan_config -i tu0 -s 100 -a 0 -m utp
     lan_config -i tu0 -s 200 -a 0 -m utp

made the LED on the network disappear. Whic is not suprising since
setting ewa0_mode to anything else but 'TWISTED-PAIR' or 'FULL
DUPLEX TWISTE PAIR' didn't work. So to me there seems to be some
fundamental hardware problem between the switch and the Ethernet
   card.

Solution: using a long cable and plug the ES40 into a Bay Networks
BayStack 350T - works at 100Mb half-duplex.

 my original question:

Dear all,

I just bought some new switches (transtec MiniSwitch 800) which can do
auto-negotiation to 10 & 100 Mbit Ethernet (half and full duplex).

Everything works fine, but our ES40 will only run in 10 Mbit mode
using

  set ewa0_mode twisted or
  set ewa0_mode full

on the SRM console. Setting it to 'auto-negotiate' fails misserable
with an error. 'fast' and 'fastfd' don't work either.

I upgraded to the latest firmware on the ES40. The machine has a

  DECchip 21140: Revision: 2.2

in it. All other machines (various Linux PCs, Windows NT and a PWS
500au with DECchip 21143: Revision: 3.0 are running at full speed).

Question: is there a known issue with ethernet cards (DECchip 21140)
in ES40s? Or might the problem be with the MiniSwitch?

I'll summarize ...

Cheers

Clemens
