It would definitely appear that the NVRAM backup battery on our
AlphaStation 500 has died. Apparently the AlphaStation 500 has a
battery that's integrated into a chip on the motherboard, rather than
using a replaceable battery like the AlphaStation 255 and others do.
Several respondents said the chip is labeled with the word DALLAS if
you're trying to find it. Replacing it usually involves a motherboard
swap, unless you're able to obtain a separate replacement and brave
enough to wield a soldering iron.

Our machine is no longer under service contract (deliberately, as we
plan to phase out the use of these AlphaStations) and we're probably not
going to try to replace the battery ourselves.
