Answers:

-Does your motd have the version number in it?

-sizer -v, introduced in V4.0, will give you the version including letter.
But Rev 386 is indeed V4.0 (no letter.)

-stings /vmunix | grep '(Rev'

-uerf -R -r 300 | more

-The real version string is embedded in the kernel. Go look at the script
/sbin/init.d/motd to see how it is extracted for your version. I bet you
have the original V4.0 on that system (no letter).

Original question was:

I believed I had running V4.0A on one old system.
uname -a gives
OSF1 V4.0 386 alpha.

I just tried an installupdate but it exits with the nessage
"... for update to V4.0D you must have V4.0A/B/C"

Which Version do I have? Is there a place where these ugly
revision numbers (e.g. 386) are translated to version
numbers (e.g. A,B,...)?

Regards
Otto
