Well, everyone seems to agree that the wording is flaky and a bit
ambiguous (save for a text file sent about a year ago that for some
reason isn't included in the current agreement language), but it's
pretty clear that CSLG/ESL eligibility is indeed restricted to Compaq
hardware.
It was conceded that you could probably 'get away with it', but the
whole mess of trouble that could be brought upon the individual and
the institution is probably not worth the risk. PERIOD.

Does anyone know if eligibility for a license under CSLG/ESL is
contingent on the hardware?
I'm at UCLA, and the University of California participates in the
CSLG/ESL from Compaq. The software license folks claim that in
order to buy a license of CSLG/ESL (and get access to all of the
software), we must be buying it for a Compaq Alpha machine running
Tru64 UNIX.
However, I have a vendor who believe that that's not true. As long
as I have a valid license of Tru64 UNIX, I should be able to buy a
license of CSLG/ESL. Otherwise, they claim that it's an illegal
restriction of trade or something like that.
I've read thru all the license agreements on the Compaq site, and
there is no reference to a hardware requirement to participate in
CSLG/ESL. But the software license folks (including the ones at
Compaq) seem convinced that only Compaq systems are eligible.
Can anyone shed some insight?
