System partially coming up.

Managers,

We have -

Systems: 4 ES40s in a 3+1 ASE cluster running 4.0F PK#4. (enhanced Security
         + NIS)
Disks: Each server has 2 9.1GB disks (LSMd, so 4 disks in all) hosting the
root, usr, var and tmp file domains and associated filesets.

A BA300 storage array has three other file domains pertaining to the
services provided by each primary server.

This system was running a service that moved flawlessly to the standby
machine when this system started to misbehave.

Why the service moved we are not sure, but the ase daemons stopped. The
syslog.dated files and the messages file do not have much information.

After that the system automatically rebooted. We tried to look for vmzcore
files and crash data but could not find any.

1. We are able to see NFS disks being mounted, but we do not see nfs
   daemons.
2. We are able to login only if the .rhosts has appropriate entries.
3. ASE processes are not running.

When we try to run the NFS service as /sbin/init.d/nfs start we get the
error:

   /sbin/init.d/nfs[75]: syntax error at line 173 : `"' unmatched

We do not get this error on the other 3 systems. We get a similar error
when trying to start the ASE processes.

We did not find the vmunix file to be corrupted as we compared it with the
one that got generated in /sys/MACHINE/vmunix.

I would appreciate any hints/suggestions as to what could be wrong.

Thank you,
