No First Valid Path

I have a scsi device question:
     I am running an Alpha 1200 with the Tru64 v5.0a OS. Connected to the
server is 5 external scsi tape drives. From time to time, the devices lose
their path, ie, if I did a hwmgr -show scsi, the tape device in question
would no longer have a first valid path. Does anyone know of a way of
recreating that path without doing a reboot?
