Thanks for the replies.
The only solution that worked for me was hard coding the PC's IP address in
/etc/securettys ie
10.2.66.31:0
The frustrating thing here is :-
1) I have never had to the this is the past and yet I could use X root
access
2) IP addresses are 'loaned' to our PC's so this is a short term workaround
until the IP address changes.
