/usr/spool/mail/$USER proplems

Hi all,

One our user has following problem: Sometimes when he is trying to open
pine (Version 4.33 but this happened also with 4.31)
his /usr/spool/mail/$USER file is somehow changed to directory, so he
of coarse can't open and read his mails.
Do you have any idea where from it can come?
