Thanks to all who responded so soon..
We have resolved the issue ..
Was caused by corrupt NIS map files..
As we have the "+" convention at the bottom of our password file the login
process tried to look at our NIS maps and as the server bound to itself and
the maps were corrupt we had a login issue.
I have temporarily bound to another machine and this has let us boot up and
login. Will resolv the map corruption tommorrow (another day) as this is the
NIS Master
