Hey All!
Not strictly Tru64 but I'm implementing a backup system here.
For geographical reasons I'm almost certain to buy either an Overland or an
Exabyte tape library although I'm worried about Exabyte's future.
I'm almost certain to buy Legato Networker as they've come to the party with
good academic pricing. Veritas NetBackup would do except it's much pricier.
I need a library with around 1TB capacity.
The thing is, what tape technology to go for?
I really don't know how to decide between LTO and SuperDLT but I'm worried I
won't be able to feed the drive fast enough as much of our data is a
bazillion tiny files. Now unless anyone has any evidence to the contrary if
that happens there's going to be shoeshining, where the tape has to
constantly stop and start and end up decreasing head & media life and
decreasing throughput by an order of magnitude.
On the other hand there's Exabyte's Mammoth-2 technology which although not
having the performance of LTO or SuperDLT will likely not suffer from
shoeshining.
Also if anyone can recommend any sites to find out more info on mhy own
that'd be appreciated.
Cheers,
Irvine Short
