Recognizing tape drive on 5.1

I am having to repartition the root disk on an Alpha ES40 running Tru64
5.1. As usual when I boot from a cd to do the disklabel the tape drive
isnt recognized. I have done this with 4.0f several times and realize
you have to do a MAKEDEV tz??. It appears that this is different in
5.1 as this is the first time in 5.1 I have performed this. How do I
get it to recognize an AIT50 tape drive?
