Thanks for all the replies. My question follows at the end.
1. Made a backup of 4.0D
2. Update from 4.0D to 4.0G went smoothly after deleting Open3D,
Mutimedia SW and Cam SCSI SW
3. I nstalled Open3D and Cam SCSI SW.
4. Made a backup of 4.0G.
5. Started 5.1 update with gui. Answered yes for deleting Open3D and Cam
SCSI SW.
Got the error message that there is no libX11.so in /usr/shlib
directory and
/cdrom/isl/updeng : fork failed -too many processes
waited for a long long time and stopped update
6. Rebooted from 4.0G CD.
7. Tried to create new root domain and usr domain after removing the
advfs entry (disklabel -s /dev/rz18a unused)
Could not create the domain because of error(Not remembering the
error-Sorry).
Relabelled the disk tried again to create the domain. Again got error
message.
8. Replaced the disk with a new one.Labelled the disk. Created the Domain.
Restored 4.0G from Tape.
9. Again started to upgrade to 5.1 with gui. Again libX11.so and too many
process
error.Waited 3hrs. Since nothing was happening stopped update.
10.Could not restart system afterwards. So again booted from 4.0G CD and
restored
from Tape.
11. Looked in /usr/shlib directory and found that libX11.so was a softlink
to a another file. It seems that this file should exist(not a link) in
this
directory. That was my one problem. I copied this file from another
system.
12. Now I started the update with 'nogui' mode and I could do the update.
Because of some reasons the Advfs daemon was not installed. So I have
to install that from OS CD. The Open3D and Multimedia SW I installed
from Assosiated products CD.
Now every things works. The Backup in each stage of Update was very
helpful.
I think the defect disk and the file (libx11.so) were my problems.
I installed all the other SW like Fortran, C++ etc afterwards.
The Question was:
