SUMMARY:

Thanx to all who responded: Sreenivasa Prasad, Pat Obrien, Dagmar Galama, Robert Bumpus, Paul B Lambert

In a way my knowledge of clustering was not as good as i expected: Sreenivasa pointed out that there are three options for applications to run in a cluster
Single : running on one server in the cluster using caa software to make it high available
Multiple: Running on both servers, no need for caa software to make it high available.
Distributed: Running on both servers, taking advantage of the cluster environment for optimization, idem.

Clearly I missed the point about application types 2 & 3.

In our situation over here: apparently we attempted to install Oracle Parallel Server, but this doesn't work. So the good news is the backup is probably ok, the bad news: we run oracle processes on one server that are useless and more important we dont have a cluster environment...
