I have been given nine very simillar answers - to shut down and
power cycle the whole system (not only to reboot the machine). Today
(holliday here) I shut down the machine but the problem is still there.
So, I have to replace drive and then :

"I had similar symptoms on a TLZ10 and had Compaq replace the drive. Then
we hooked the old one with the tape inside to a power supply from a PC and
power cycled the PC which caused the tape to be ejected." (thanx to Greg
Poole)

This time there wasn't no magic solution.
