I've tried searching the list archives and while I find a number of
requests similar to this one, ominously there seem to be no answers.
So I promise to summarize.
We have had two HP C1553A 6-tape autoloader units working happily
under Tru64 Unix 4.0B for some years. Recently I upgraded to 5.1
and discovered that, while we can access the unit as a single-tape
device using /dev/tape/tape0_d7, mtx no longer works:
# mtx -d /dev/tape/tape0_d7 -s
Illegal Request : Logical unit not supported
Consulting the mtx Web page I find:
This program supports FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris and IRIX.
Tru64 Unix and VMS are probably irretrievably broken at
this time.
Is that accurate? And if so, does anyone have any other suggestions
for software that will support command line manipulation of tapes for
this autoloader?

I always wanted to be someone - I guess I should have been more specific
