Most have given the answer 'date +%j' which displays the number of days elapsed since the start of the year, which is not really what I'm after. If anyone knows the MV world then what I really wanted was an internal date type function within TRU64. This is for a shell script on a server without an MV, hence that wasn't possible.
Thanks to Lucio Chiappetti for an excellent explanation of what the Julian date 'really' is and for pointing me at a most informative web site should I ever take up astronomy!!

In the mean time, I guess I need to think again at what I really want achieve
Regards,
Bryan.
The question was,
Does anyone know how to display the date in julian date format? Doesn't seem to be an option using the standard date command.
Thanks,
Bryan.
