UNIX session timeout

Does anyone know how to timeout inactive UNIX sessions that aren't at
the UNIX prompt.

The ksh and csh variables TMOUT and autologout do exactly what I want
but only if the user is at the UNIX prompt, they don't work if the user
has left themself in a shell menu or application.

e.g. The following doesn't time out
% set autologout=1
% read reply

Currently using Tru64 V4.0E & F

Thanks
