SUMMARY: 'umount: device busy'

Well, several people advised me to try lsof, which
I did, and which also shows no open files, but
the filesystem remains stubbornly 'busy' when
I try to dismount it. So for the moment, I'm
stuck unless I reboot the system. I'll report
back if I ever find the cause.
